The most essential and important tool or accessory a biker can have is a properly fitting helmet. If you can only leave the house with one accessory, it should always be a helmet. Protecting that brain should be a no-brainer.

Spare Tubes & Patch Kits

The last thing you want is to find yourself stranded with a flat during your ride. Spare tubes and patch kits are always good to have on hand so that a flat tire doesn’t flatten your ride.

When it comes to patching, you’ve got a few options:

  1. Glueless patch – Slap it on and saddle up, essentially a glorified sticker, glueless patches are the fastest and easiest solution.
  2. Glue patch – A more traditional patch kit, the glue patch is a bit beefier than its alternative. Glue patches require you clean and scuff up the patch area w sandpaper, apply glue to the innertube and let it dry before applying your patch.

As for tubes, tubes come in many different models and sizes, get totally tubular, and check out our full selection here

Pump or Co2 Canister

A spare tube would be of little to no use if you didn’t have anything to fill it with. For this reason, our next recommendation is a handheld pump or CO2 cartridge to make sure your spare gives you the same gnarly ride as the original.

Basic Tool Kit

It’s always good to keep a few tools on hand, a basic tool kit could (and should) include a multitool specific to your bike, tire levers, a few spare chain links, and a masterlink or quicklink. If you’re planning a longer ride, your tool kit should be a bit more extensive including such things as derailleur hangars and shifter cables.

First Aid Kit

Let’s face it, nobody’s perfect, even the pros take a digger at some point. First aid kits, or even just a few bandaids, are always important to have during a ride, don’t let a few scratches slow you down!

Now that you’ve got all your tools together, you may realize your bike suddenly has a drastic lack of storage space. There are many different packs a biker can choose from, of course, one being a backpack which can be found in bike-specific models in order to as sleek and undetectable as possible so as not to detract from the ride by adding weight and bouncing around. If a backpack isn’t your style, fanny-pack style bags, as well as saddle and frame bags, are also available.
